- W2337297992 abstract "Incorporating various forms of social media in the classroom enhances learning and motivates students to contribute to class lessons and activities. This article discusses some successful approaches for implementing wikis, Facebook, Pinterest and Goodreads in the classroom.Using WikisThe developmental writing course at Nassau Community College is designed to meet the needs of struggling and reluctant writers and equip them with the skills necessary for writing thoughtful, organized, evidence-based compositions. Each class includes up to 17 students, and instructors are encouraged to create a supportive community of writers, cultivating students' writing voices, styles, creativity, and competency. Clearly, there is much to accomplish in the 15-week semester, and time and teaching methods must be managed strategically.Over the past couple of semesters, instructors of this class have used a class wiki to create micro tasks that have an element of fun, prompt careful thinking, develop vocabulary, and address common writing/grammatical errors, without overloading students with additional lengthy assignments or using inauthentic skill and drill. For those of you who may not be familiar with a wiki, it is, quite simply, a collaborative workspace. If you can type a word document, you can use a wiki. The instructors created sites for their classes for free at www.pbworks.com. PBworks is extremely userfriendly and will walk you through the process of naming your wiki and adding your students. Once those practicalities are done, you can start creating pages. The front page of the wiki is what students see when they log on to the site. The instructor uses that page as the table of contents for each assignment. Every week, the instructor adds a date to the front page. Next to the date, the instructor adds a note telling the students what page/s they need to access for that week's task. The instructor changes colors and fonts so that each new direction is easy to see.Sample of the front page instructions:HI EVERYONE,This is our WIKI. It's a collaborative space in which will we practice and share a variety of writing activities. I will update this page each time there is a new writing opportunity and will direct you toward a particular page which will be listed in the box to the right; see it over there ?Any time I add an assignment, I will either tell you in class or through REMIND. When you get to our WIKI, this page will open up and you will see a list of dates and related assignments.MARCH 9th: You have two pages to visit. ADD a word to MATTER. Then, go to HORROR and follow the instructions. Your work needs to be added BEFORE our class on Thursday, March 12th.On the WORDS MATTER page, students were asked to add a word to the growing list of new vocabulary. As they came across words through their reading, they would take note of the word and add it to the list. Interestingly, the students were enthusiastic about this page. They were proud of discovering and using more sophisticated language in their writing. On the HORROR! page, students were asked to visit this link: http://www.tickld.com/x/20-two-sentence-horror-storiesthat-will-keep-you-up-at-night-7-gave-me-chills and read through all twenty examples of two-sentence horror stories. Then, they were given this instruction: write your own two-sentence horror story. Be sure that your sentences are complete and grammatically correct. Don't be afraid to try to lengthen your space by connecting a couple of independent clauses together with the help of a semicolon or conjunction/comma combination. On another page, students were asked to add two sentences to a paragraph describing Manhattan [Editor's Note: Manhattan, New York City]; the instructor's intent was to have them focus on using vibrant language and on maintaining cohesion among details. The first draft was not impressive. As the class reviewed it collectively, however, the instructor did not have to point out the problems; the students recognized the issues themselves. …" @default.
