The obtained findings suggest that adapted scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool. SUMMARY Purpose and significance: The evaluation of the learning environment with appropriate methods, detecting the deficiencies and improving the environment are equally important as preparing and presenting a well-designed learning environment. A number of scales have been developed to evaluate constructivist learning environments. The objective of the present research is to adapt Constructivist Learning Environment Survey-CLES developed by Taylor, Fraser and Fisher (1997) into Turkish and test the validity and reliability of the scale. Method: Research sample is composed of 619 students from primary education 6 th , 7 th and 8 th grades. These students have been selected from the city center, districts and villages of Balikesir via cluster sampling method. In this study, general scanning model has been employed. English form of CLES (Constructivist Learning Environment Survey) developed by Taylor, Fraser and Fisher and reduced to thirty items in 1997 by the same researchers in line with the recent changes and edits has been utilized. Subsequent to verifying the linguistic equivalence of scale, the validity and reliability analyses have been conducted via SPSS 15 and LISREL 8.5 programs. Results: The linguistic equivalence test has revealed that correlation of items between Turkish and original form is .728. To illustrate, Cronbach-alpha reliability coefficient has been found as .847 and confirmatory factor analysis has verified that the scale is compatible with the original form (X 2 /sd=2.34, GFI=.92, AGFI=.92, CFI=.92, RMSEA= .048). Additionally, it has been detected that the scale's corrected item-total correlations vary between .334 and .547. Discussion and conclusion: Explanatory factor analysis findings that were obtained by eliminating 5 cyclical items from the scale manifest that just as the original form of the scale this adapted form consists of five sub- scales, namely, learning to learn, learning to communicate, learning about the world, learning about science and learning to express oneself. Parallel to the original form, the items possess high factor loads within their own sizes. These five sub-scales explained 53.410% of total variance. Considering the fact in scale development and adaptation tests, 30% and higher ratio is taken as criteria for explanatory variance ratio. It has thus been verified that the scale fits into structural validity. Within the context of fit index limits for confirmatory factor analysis, it can reasonably be asserted that the model's goodness of fit index is high and the scale's original factor structure is compatible with Turkish form's factor structure." @default.
