- W233744767 abstract "This paper deals with cytological studies bearing on the ]problem of clu'omosome evolution i~ a free-living population of grasshoppers. It results from the discovery (l%ay-Chaudhuri ~'Ianna, 1951) of a supernumerary chromosome in all the dividing ceils of the testes of two individuals of Aiolopus sp. BiIl a sample of twenty-six male specimens examined in 1947 by the authors. In order to obtain some indication of the part played by natural selection in causing either an increase or decrease in the fl'equency of this particular condition in successive generations, it is essential to have a quantitative estimate of the frequency of individuals having supernumerary chromosomes for a number of successive years from a population in the same locality. Furthermore, it is necessary to determine the relative frequencies of the individuals with supernumerary chromosomes among populations of the same species coming from different localities. The spread or disappearance of a chromosome mutation in course of successive generations depends not only on its survival value during the operation of natural selection but also on the behaviour of the particular chromosome during gametogenesis. Therefore, a study of meiosis in the male individuals carrying the supernumerary chromosome is imperative. We shM1 report in this paper results of the aforesaid studies on Aiolopus sp. B which involved the collection and cytological examination of ~01 male specimens from two different localities and our observations on the meiosis in fifty-two males carrying one and in some cases two or more supernumeraries. NATERIAL AND 1KETHOI) Two localities known as ' Kashba' and' Garia' near sough CMcugta were selected for the present work..These places are separated from each other by a distance of nearly six miles covered with small cottages and dwetliug houses. The collections were made from grass lands sm'rounded by paddy fields within the above areas. Only male spechnens were colleci;cd; TM)le 1 is a sununary of our results. The individnMs collected were serially mm~ bered as K 1, K2, K 3, etc., for the Kashba and G 1, G2, O 3, etc., for the Garia P0pulatio.. The daily collections were brought to the laboratory and the testis of each" @default.
