- W2337509105 abstract "This chapter focuses on the anti-inflammatory effect of betaine during aging. Betaine is a well-established methyl donor that controls levels of homocysteine, well known for its deleterious effects and contribution in the development of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neural tube defects. Betaine also has the ability to attenuate oxidative stress, one of the most important contributors in accelerating the aging process. Under oxidative stress, the activation of the proinflammatory factor nuclear factor (NF)-κB is particularly implicated in aging and age-related inflammatory diseases. Since reports are scarce on the association between proinflammatory factor NF-κB and betaine in the aging process, we thought it would be interesting to explore the ability of betaine to regulate NF-κB during aging. Therefore, in this chapter, we highlight the antioxidative and antiaging roles of betaine, emphasizing the molecular basis of its effects." @default.
