- W2337702900 abstract "As we have often been told, the phrase amour courtois (courtly love) first appeared in an essay written by Gaston Paris (Romania, 1883). It seems to be an innocent enough phrase, but in fact, one could spend a life time pursuing its portents. In an admirably coherent summary of scholarship dealing with the ori gins and meanings of courtly love, Roger Boase claims that it has variously been seen as collective fantasy (an institutionalization of neurotic values, generated by a mother fixation of infantile origin), as courtly experience of a universal sensibility, as stylistic convention (rhetorical tradition from which the medieval writer could draw certain themes and stylistic devices), and as critical fallacy (an illusion of modern criticism).1 F. X. Newman, editor of a collection of essays emanating from a symposium on courtly love held at the Center Medieval and early Renaissance Studies of the State University of New York at Binghamton (1967), gives some comfort to the confused student when he claims that in spite of the scholars' disagreement about the origins and sources of courtly love, there has been a core of common assumptions about its meaningfulness.2 That is, one can believe it exists as a describable phenomenon. In The Expansion and Transformation of Courtly Literature (1980), a volume of essays coming out of the Second Triennial Congress of the Inter national Courtly Literature Society, Nathan Smith and Joseph Snow praise the defining power of the Binghamton Conference and further state that for modern scholars the term [courtly love] itself is real, better or worse?and real its adversaries as well as its defenders since to attack even an undefinable term is to come to grips with its existence. 3" @default.
