- W23379224 abstract "The term “Status asthmaticus” has been defined by the American Thoracic Society as “an acute asthmatic attack in which the degree of bronchial obstruction is either severe from the beginning or increases in severity and is not relieved by the usual treatment such as epinephrine or aminophylline” [1]. It is generally recommended that patients with status asthmaticus should be treated under clinical conditions. Recent surveys about asthma mortality stress the discrepancy between the better understanding of the pathophysiology and improved specific medical treatment of the disease and the overall constant or increasing death rate [2–5]. It was concluded that most of the deaths were avoidable [2, 6] with better medical education of patients, health care workers and physicians to avoid underassessment and “undertreatment” of asthma. Nevertheless, the mortality of the in-hospital patients seems too high despite admission to an intensive care unit (ICU). Nowadays, mortality rates of status asthmaticus necessitating mechanical ventilation range between 0% and 38% (mean 15%) [7–18]. In a nine-year-period (1979–1987), we treated 49 patients in 59 episodes of status asthmaticus with mechanical ventilation, only 2 patients died." @default.
