• W2337956827 abstract "Eco friendly, low cost Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using natural pigments extracted from Bornean native pioneer plant Melastoma malabathricum L. (Melastomaceae; local name “Kuduk-Kuduk”) grown under ‘full sun’ conditions (16001800 µmol m -2 s -1 ). The photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll (chlorophyll “a” and “b”) and carotenoids (carotene and lutein) were extracted and separated from the leaves, while sap pigment anthocyanin (flavanoid class) was extracted from the flowers of this plant. Pigment sensitized TiO2 solar cells were fabricated with liquid electrolyte comprising the I3 - /I - redox couple. The solar cells fabricated with pigment extracted from the flowers (anthocyanin) of this plant showed higher photo-responses than the pigments extracted from the leaves. The conversion efficiency of the DSSCs sensitized with anthocyanin dyes from the flower extract was 0.64%, with an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 395 mV, short-circuit current density (ISC) of 2.76 mA cm -2 , and Fill Factor (FF) of 0.40. DSSCs sensitized by chlorophyll dyes extracted from leaves showed comparatively lower efficiencies than the sap pigment treated DSSCs. The pigment treated DSSCs comprising chlorophyll “b” and Lutein pigment mixture demonstrated a relatively high conversion efficiency of 0.32%, with VOC of 292 mV, ISC of 1.02 mA cm -2 and FF of 0.47. Marked enhancement in the efficiency was achieved when flower pigment extracts (sap pigments) were treated with conc. HCl (50:0.2 v/v). UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry data revealed that a new HOMO level was formed in dye molecules upon adding HCl which contributed to the enhancement of DSSC efficiency." @default.
