(The issue of communicative misunderstanding has been in the limelight of researchers’ attention for more than 30 years. The problem has been investigated from the various perspectives of the humanities and social sciences, that is why different approaches to the definition of this phenomenon appeared. The aim of the article is to determine the place of misunderstanding in communication and differentiate the terms used to designate this notion.Misunderstanding occupies an intermediate link in communication trichotomy: understanding – misunderstanding – nonunderstanding.Success in interaction depends on the interpretative activity of the recipient. Correct interpretation leads tounderstanding, and incorrect – to non-understanding.The phenomenon «misunderstanding» is conveyed by a range of terms such as miscommunication, communicationbreakdown, communicative failure, which are used synonymously in the scientific literature.«Miscommunication» and «misunderstanding» are usually applied interchangeably in the Western linguistic tradition. In the broad sense, miscommunication refers to any problems that arise during communication, while in the narrow sense, it coincides with the pragmatic meaning of misunderstanding, i.e. the wrong interpretation of the speaker’s intention by the listener.Misunderstanding may be repaired with a set of turns that follow, and mutual understanding may be restored. In case the corrective turns are not initiated, communication breakdown happens due to the lack of understanding. If the repair is not effective, communicative aim and perlocutionary effect are not achieved, interlocutors face a communicative failure. In the Eastern European linguistic studies, misunderstanding is equaled to a communicative failure, but this phenomenonis not an ultimate result of interaction, it does not necessarily entail a communication breakdown or failure, that is why we deem this identification inappropriate.Hence, misunderstanding is a communicative-cognitive complication, which arises due to unaware or aware wronginterpretation of the semantic and/or pragmatic side of the utterance by the recipient and may be corrected by repair.)" @default.
