- W2338259241 abstract "As the Introduction noted, remnants of sexuality, in a variety of expressions, can be found throughout Beckett’s works, albeit often in non-normative, distorted, or oblique forms. The prevalence of sex and its use as a motif in the works can best be traced to the origins of Beckett’s oeuvre, the aborted novel Dream of Fair to Middling Women. This exuberant, if not entirely successful, work was cannibalized to form the backbone of the collection More Pricks than Kicks, although important differences pertain between the two works. Beckett consistently refused to publish this first novel, describing it as the “chest into which [he] threw [his] wild thoughts,”1 and only the author’s death finally permitted its publication. Yet this chest proves to be a treasure trove in terms of the attitudes expressed toward, and the uses made of, sexuality. It might be argued that Beckett’s attempt to distance himself from Dream of Fair to Middling Women implies that what might be there to uncover would have little or no bearing on his more mature works. However, such an assertion is undermined by the consistent deployment of sexual motifs across the decades and genres of the oeuvre, which are first found in Dream of Fair to Middling Women. A case in point is the bizarre sexual stimulation occasioned by the sight of a defecating horse." @default.
