Se explora el rol de la instruccion del adulto en el desarrollo de dicha competencia. Se emplea una tarea de busqueda en la que los ninos deben utilizar un mapa para encontrar un juguete en una habitacion pequena. El Estudio 1 compara la ejecucion de 2 grupos de ninos de 30 y 36 meses, brindandoles instrucciones explicitas acerca de la relacion mapa-habitacion. Se pretende conocer si dicha relacion es susceptible de ser ensenada a los pequenos. Los resultados indican que mientras los ninos de 30 meses no lograron reconocer que el mapa y la habitacion se hallan relacionados simbolicamente (12%), los de 36 meses en su mayoria resolvieron en forma incorrecta la primer subprueba pero luego haber recibido ensenanza explicita, alcazaron el insight representacional (89%). El Estudio 2 examina a partir de que edad los ninos son capaces de comprender y utilizar la funcion simbolica de un mapa sin instruccion. Se encontro que a los 42 meses algunos ninos fueron capaces de resolver la prueba, mientras que a los 46 meses la mayoria alcanzo el insight representacional (85%).Palabras claveInstruccion Insight representacionalABSTRACTYOUNG CHILDREN COMPREHENSION OF MAPS The primary interest of the present research is to study young children’s understanding and use of maps. In particular, the role of adult’s instruction in the development of such ability. The studies employ a search task where children have to use a map in order to find a toy in a small room. Study 1 compare two age group children with explicit instructions about the maproom relation: 30 and 36 month- olds. The aim of this study is to find out if it is possible to teach little children the symbolic function of a map. The results show that while 30-month old children are not able at all of recognizing the map-rom relation (12%), 36-month-old children achieved representational insight after failing the first search and being explicitly taught how to use the map (89%). Study 2 examines at which age children are capable of recognizing and using the symbolic function of a map completely on their own.
