- W2340380079 abstract "Mi intention in this article is, first, to critically review the notion of language through the analysis of practices in the mathematics classroom and, second, to contribute to the task of conceptualizing this notion from a social and pedagogical perspective. To do so, I address the case of the bilingual mathematics classroom because this is where I have been developing my most recent research activity. I claim that the use of a too general and theoretically weak notion of language in mathematics education hinders the understanding of the mediating role of the students’ languages in the learning of mathematics. I elaborate on this claim with data from my context to argue the possibility of a notion which, to the prevailing metaphors of language as a right and as a problem, adds the metaphor of language as a resource. The triple foundation of language as right, problem and resource ultimately assumes that the basic function of the students’ languages in the classroom is to contribute to the joint creation of learning opportunities." @default.
