- W2340404300 abstract "ABSTRACT This paper describes some of the findings of an extensive research programme, conducted by Ricardo, aimed at exploring the potential benefits of high compression ratio, lean burn engine operation. The results of this work indicate that use of a compact combustion chamber of suitable design permits employment of a compression ratio which is significantly higher, for a given fuel quality, than is possible with more conventional chamber arrangements. Such combustion systems are amenable to operation with lean air/fuel mixtures when benefits in terms of improved fuel economy and lower NOx emissions are exhibited. NOx emissions can be further reduced by application of EGR to which the optimised combustion systems are very tolerant." @default.
