- W2340696054 abstract "The main purpose of this study was to examine the secondary 5 th -, 6 th -, and 7 th -grade students' views on original thinking in the dimensions of flexibility, originality, elaboration, and fluency. The study group of this descriptive study that was handled in the form of a survey model consisted of 540 students attending fifth, sixth and seventh grades, in the central district of Kars, during the 2012-2013 school-year, second semester. After eliminating the missing data, the study group consisted totally of 314 students. Original thinking questionnaire was used to collect qualitative data. As a result of the original thinking research, secondary school students received the highest score from the sub-dimension of fluency. However, depending on these findings, it has been found that, according to grade level, fifth-grade students, and according to gender variable, female students can think more originally. SUMMARY Purpose and significance: The main objective of this study was to investigate secondary school 5 th -, 6 th -, and 7 th - grade students' views on original thinking regarding the dimensions of flexibility, originality, elaboration and fluency. This descriptive research was conducted using scanning model and the study group consisted of 540 students who were studying 5 th -, 6 th -, and 7 th -grades at Ziya Gokalp Secondary School, Namik Kemal Primary School, Esenkent Sehit Bedri Sinan Colak Secondary School, Sehit Albay Ibrahim Karaoglanoglu Boarding Secondary School and Ataturk Primary School in Kars city center, in the second semester of 2012-2013 academic-year. The Original Thinking Survey was used as a data collection tool in the research. For validity and reliability concerns, a review of the literature was conducted and experts' opinion was obtained. The Original Thinking Survey cosists of two parts. In the first part, there are two questions in order to describe the characteristics of the students in the study group related to gender and grade level. The second part of the Critical Thinking Survey was established according to the dimensions of the original thinking items that were prepared. While preparing the Original Thinking Survey, 67 items were created to ensure content validity, primarily involving the determination of original thinking skills. Original Thinking Survey was organized according to the steps of higher level thinking skills and composed of the sentences expressing these dimensions. These sentences were prepared by the researchers by using relevant resources. After missing data had been eliminated, the study group was composed of a total of 314 students. Methods: In this research, deductive research approach was used. Survey method was used in order to collect data from participants. Results: In parallel with these findings, it can be said that students lack self-confidence when the answers which the secondary school students gave to the questions regarding the flexibility dimension of original thinking were evaluated. Flexibility means being able to think freely by breaking the traditions while solving a problem. As the result of the research, it was seen that secondary school students scored the highest point in the sub-dimension of rationalism in free thinking survey. In light of the findings obtained, again, it was concluded that fifth-grade students, in respect to class level, and female students, in respect to gender variable, were able to think more originally. Discussion and Conclusions: In light of the findings obtained, it may be beneficial to reflect the activities which improve original thinking on the curriculum more intensely and to teach the free activity lessons in primary schools more systematically and effectively from the beginning of preschool education. It is suggested that the thinking education discipline should be included in the compulsory courses by removing it from the optional courses, and pre-service teachers should be taught the free thinking lessons compulsorily in their undergraduate education. Because original thinking, which is one of the higher order thinking skills, should be acquired by the individuals from the early ages. Thinking education requires an organized system since it cannot be performed superficially. Relevant acquisitions should be reflected on the curriculum to perform this education in a subject or skill oriented way and they need to be known and internalized by the teachers who are the practitioners of the program." @default.
