- W2340765408 abstract "In Dutch, a word-final obstruent followed by a word-initial voiced stop typically undergoes regressive voice assimilation in the direction of voicedness. However, it has been reported that in some varieties of Belgian Dutch, progressive rather than regressive voice assimilation occurs when the word-initial obstruent is a /t/ and the word-initial stop a /d/. This paper examines to what extent native speakers of Belgian Dutch produce regressive and progressive voice assimilations in /d/-initial clusters across word-boundaries and to what extent they transfer these assimilations into English, in which obstruents are usually realized according to their underlying voice specification, i.e. without voice assimilation. The results reveal that the Belgian Dutch participants produced progressive devoicing in nearly all /t/ + /d/ clusters in Dutch conversational speech, but did not produce this devoicing to the same extent when speaking English. Various explanations in terms of the weak character of English coronal stops and the universal preference for regressive over progressive voice assimilation are discussed." @default.
