• W2341107812 abstract "SUMMARY .—Several boreal taxa can be found in southern latitudes in fragments of high altitude alpine habitat. Some of these taxa have remained isolated from the main populations in northern latitudes as a result of the distribution changes during the last glaciations, being known as glacial relict populations. Such relict populations have often differentiated from the main population as a result of isolation and genetic drift. The Tengmalm’s owl Aegolius funereus is a widespread boreal forest species distributed throughout boreal Eurasia and North America. The westernmost Eurasian breeding population is located in the Pyrenees Mountains, and was discovered less than 50 years ago. We studied the genetic structure of this Pyrenean population of Tengmalm’s owl, and compared it with a northern latitude population from Fennoscandia. Despite being isolated by several hundred kilometres from the closest breeding grounds, we found no differences in the genetic structure of the mitochondrial DNA when compared with the central population. Our results suggest that this population has been recently, or still is connected with the main population. RESUMEN .—Diversos taxones de origen boreal pueden encontrarse actualmente en latitudes meri dionales, aislados en zonas fragmentadas de habitat alpino. Algunos de ellos se han mantenido aislados de sus poblaciones centrales mas al norte, como resultado de los cambios de distribucion durante las ultimas glaciaciones y son conocidas como poblaciones relictas (glaciales). Dichas poblaciones relictas a menudo se han diferenciado de la poblacion central debido al aislamiento y la deriva genetica . El mochuelo boreal Aegolius funereu s es una especie boreal ampliamente distribuida por los bosques de Eurasia y Norteamerica. La poblacion euroasiatica mas occidental se encuentra en los Pirineos, y fue descubierta hace menos de 50 anos. Hemos estudiado la estructura genetica de esta poblacion pirenaica y la hemos comparado con una poblacion boreal de Fennoscandia. Aun estando alejada por varios cien tos de kilometros de las poblaciones reproductoras mas cercanas, no encontramos diferencia alguna en la estructura genetica del ADN mitocondrial entre la poblacion pirenaica y fennoscandica. Nuestros resultados sugieren que las poblaciones han estado recientemente, o siguen actualmente en contacto." @default.
