• W2341338410 abstract "Abstract The sexual harassment experiences of black women have been more widely rec-ognized in recent years, yet they remain underexamined in empirical research. Racial and gender stereotypes about black women may put them at risk for being sexually harassed and experiencing negative outcomes. How women cope with sexual harassment can lessen or exacerbate the negative impact of harassment on these outcomes. The current study examines the sexual harassment, coping responses, and subsequent psychological and occupational outcomes of 2,842 black women serving in the U.S. armed forces. Participants were grouped by their coping profiles, and outcomes were compared across groups. Coping groups dif-fered in their psychological well-being and work-related outcomes, and coping style interacted with overall frequency of sexual harassment. Suggestions for future research and theoretical implications of these results are discussed. S exual harassment continues to be a frequent experience for women, and research suggests that black women are often targeted, in part because of their low social status in U.S. society (Adams 1997; Collins 2000). Historically, black women have been perceived as hypersexed, and their sexual mistreatment was denied the legal redress afforded other women (Collins 2000; West 2004). Such discrimination persists and may discourage sexually assaulted black women from seeking help through formal sources, such as the police, whom they may perceive as being unsupportive (Neville and Hamer 2001).
