- W2342102005 abstract "The relationships of socioeconomic status and belief-orthodoxy to religious participation are investigated. A literature review and multivariate analysis of Mennonite data suggests: first, that the relationship between socioeconomic status and religious participation may be due to educational rather than economic factors; second, that the oft reported zero-order correlation between orthodoxy of belief and religious participation is probably not spurious; and third, that belief-orthodoxy acts as a suppressor of the education/religious participation relationship. A mong the host of correlative findings that have been generated on religious participation (under the labels of ritual [Stark and Glock, 1970:81], associational involvement [Lenski, 1963: 23], and more generally, church attendance), those involving belief-orthodoxy and socioeconomic status are some of the most intriguing as well as problematic. The intrigue, no doubt, results from the fact that both relationships are linked to major theoretical questions in the sociology of religion: the former is involved in the dispute over causality in the relationship between behavior and attitudes, and the latter bears on the Weberian/Marxian question of the relationship between social stratification and religiosity. Though this interest has resulted in an abundant amount of research, the findings themselves remain inconclusive and difficult to interpret. Two factors seem to have contributed to this situation. First, few integrative attempts have been made and thus points of consensus and conflict have not been clearly articulated. Second, most of the available evidence is based upon zero-order correlational findings even though the potentially spurious nature of these relationships should mandate the use of multivariate controls. This paper represents an effort to come to grips with a portion of the literature on religious participation through an empirical specification of its relationship to socioeconomic status and belief-orthodoxy. My approach to these relationships is" @default.
