- W2342167752 abstract "The recent recession only adds to the widespread fear that loyalties in the business world are rapidly becoming obsolete. This article spells out some of the history that has put loyalty in jeopardy and some of the characteristics of this affecton. It gives reasons why it will not disappear from the workplace. The above analysis is then followed by a contrast between past and pres? ent motivations for work and a description of the workplace of the future according to three authors. Since all of these address loyalty issues di? rectly or indirectly, there follows an analysis of the new loyalties that can be anticipated or are beginning to emerge in the workplace and the role of the manager in managing these. The article concludes by placing these future loyalties within a framework inspired by Josiah Royce. WHAT difference does it make whether there is loyalty in the workplace or not? This article contends there are several good reasons why it makes a big difference. Without loyalty we will not be able to realize any of the dreams we entertain in this our 20th century for community, solidarity, shalom, social coherence or civic wholeness. Loyalty enables people to live for more than themselves. It is, therefore, at the core of society's viability as well as the individual's spiritual and social well-being. But we need to be more specific about the difference it makes in the workplace. I will argue that the productivity of a firm is closely tied to its morale which, in turn, depends on a critical mass of loyal employees. Furthermore, loyalty's pres? ence or absence in a work situation (and the kind of loyalty it is), will be the major factor in determining the ethical character of the firm. Each of these conclusions should become clearer as this study unfolds. A working definition of loyalty would be in place here; it will be filled out when we describe the characteristics of loyalty. Suffice it to say at this point that loyalty is an affection that binds the person to act on the basis of an experienced bond. The bond always has an object which can be a person or a group of persons, an enterprise, a place, a cause, an ideal or congeries of ideals. The bond can be positive and altruistic or unfreeing and narrowing, depending on factors to be described in the course of our study. There are several reasons for thinking that workplace loyalty is becoming the exception rather than the rule and that it could eventually become ex- tinct. The reasons for being apprehensive about its future are historical, economic, managerial, and technological." @default.
