Often, the test organization is not even staffed until the software to be tested is completely coded and in unit test. In these types of situations, the test effort should be even more focused and disciplined, as defects that could have been found by test engineers during reviews and inspections of artifacts in the earlier life cycle phases are still present, and, more defects were introduced along the way and during implementation. The test literature tends not to address this unfortunate, but realistic, scenario. For these situations, a practical worst-case test methodology is offered in this dissertation. Initially developed to aid integration testing, this methodology centers on a Free-Form Test Checklist. The checklist should be applied to the software under test together with integration test cases and should also be used as a stand-alone tool to begin surfacing defects while test documentation is stiff prepared. Throughout its application on several projects it has proven to be of benefit during more than just integration testing. It is a major part of the developed methodology. The textbook approach suggests test phases that parallel the software development cycle and are executed serially along with the software development phases. The proposed worst-case methodology also suggests these phases, but differs significantly by offering its checklist. This checklist allows an earlier start of actual testing activities, and if no time were available to perform all other suggested tasks, meaningful testing could still be performed and defects surfaced with the checklist alone. A total of twenty defects were detected. Fifteen of the defects were found in the earlier test phases: seven during initial free-form testing, and eight during integration testing. Finding defects early on in the test cycle allows analysis of the defects before testing is completed, and fixes may be delivered that can still be tested within the same test cycle. In summary, a worst-case test methodology was developed that, when applied, surfaced enough defects of varied severity levels to be considered successful.
