- W23426019 abstract "Most man-made forests have a very utilitarian function to perform in the landscape, be they for wood production, land reclamation, protection or amenity. In many countries the creation of extensive plantations primarily for wood production purposes has led to regional prosperity. Industries are set up in and around the plantations to process the raw material they produce, jobs are created, community infrastructure is developed and a more varied economic base provides greater stability to the region. For these reasons plantation forestry is seen as a legitimate form of land use, ranking with livestock and grain production, and horticultural crops, as an important contributor to rural prosperity. Nowhere is this more apparent than in a number of regions in Australia and New Zealand where large-scale plantings of an exotic conifer, Pinus radiata, has resulted in considerable economic development. The same may be said for the south-east of the United States where the indigenous conifers P. elliottii var elliottii and P. taeda have been extensively planted on failed agricultural land to bring considerable prosperity to a depressed area." @default.
