- W2342775836 abstract "euphuism with a few days practise - -just as they did at Cambridge during 1580s if we can trust Thomas Nashe's remarks on popularity of style when he was an undergraduate at St. John's. Marlowe's style might be slightly more elusive, but one only has to glance at drama of 1590s to see how great an influence Marlowe's mighty line exerted on work of his contemporaries. The phrase is Ben Jonson's, from memorial verses on William Shakespeare published in 1623 Folio, and here would seem to be a positive comment on Marlowe's style. Elsewhere, however, Jonson was less complimentary. In his literary scrap-book Timber, first published posthumously in 1640 folio of his Works, Jonson appears to criticise Marlowe - or at least his imitators. Jonson insists that true artist must use a language which is more or less natural: it shall not fly from all humanity, with Tamerlanes, and Tamar-Chams of late Age, which had nothing in them but scenicall strutting, and furious vociferation, to warrant them to ignorant gapers. Jonson's contempt for stilus Tamerlanicus may have been to some extent shaped by a sense that was somehow old-fashioned, but Marlowe's contemporaries also criticised its megaphonic excesses. Robert Greene thought that filling mouthe like [faburden] of BoBell was intolerable poetrie and product of a juvenile mind: the humor of a nouice, and Joseph Hall dismisses style as a medley of huf-cap termes and thundring threats, [b]ig-sounding sentences, and words of state. Marlowe's voice, then, carried far. Some found rather too noisy for their liking, but others were clearly impressed and tried to sound that way, too. In this essay, I want to look at one such writer, whom I shall designate as B. This is man responsible for revising important scene in which spirits impersonating Alexander and his paramour are conjured up in Doctor Faustus for so-called B-text, first known from 1616 quarto. These revisions may have been made in or around 1602, some ten or a dozen years after first text of Doctor Faustus was composed, text which is now, we think, substantially represented by A-text, first known from quarto of 1604, and they may have been made by Samuel Rowley. But whoever made revisions seems to have tried to" @default.
