- W2343501155 abstract "Named“themotherofallterritorialdisputes”duetoitscomplexity,theSouthChinaSearegionhasbeenthecentreofconflictandcompetitionfordecades.Theinternationalsignificance,economicimportance,geostrategicpositionandcomplexstructureoftheSouthChinaSeadisputemakeitarelevantandinterestingsubjecttostudy.ThisthesisanalysesforeignpolicybehaviourwithintheSouthChinaSeadisputeandthefactorsthathaveinfluenceditinaperiodrangingfrom1990through2014.WhilesixSoutheastandEastAsianstateshaveexpressedvaryingandoften-‐overlappingclaimsintheregion,theanalysisspecificallylooksatthedisputebetweenChinaandthePhilippines.Theirimmensepower-‐variation,increasingassertiveness,andvaryingforeignpoliciesprovideaninterestingperspective.Moreover,theU.S.-‐PhilippineallianceenablesustolookattheinfluenceoftheU.S.,asold-‐stagehegemonandstabilizerintheAsianPacific,onbothChina’sandthePhilippines’actions.Thecasestudyresearchisexecutedthroughcongruenceanalysis,inwhichcompetingtheoriesareusednexttooneanothertomakesenseofthecentralcase.TwomainrationalistIRtheories,RealismandLiberalism,arechosentoseewhichofthemprovidesthemostrelevantexplanatoryfactorsforsocialrealityintheSino-‐Philippinedispute.TheRealistfactorsthathavebeendeductedfromtheoryaretheanarchicinternationalstructure;relativegainsandpower;andthreatperceptions.Liberalismhasprovideduswithabsolutegains;domesticdemocraticinstitutions;andeconomicinterdependenceaspossibleinfluencingfactorsforforeignpolicybehaviour.Theempiricalanalysishasshownthat,overall,RealismprovidesmoreaccurateexplanationsforbothChina’sandthePhilippinesforeignpolicy.Duetoitsanalyticalfocusonsecurityasaforeignpolicygoal,states’concernwithrelativegains,theirpositionintheanarchicinternationalsystem,internalandexternalbalancingbehaviourandthreatperceptionsithascreatedusefulinsightsintobothstates’foreignpolicy.Moreover,itsconsiderationofstates’relativepowerpositionandtheconsequentvariationsinstatebehaviourhaveproventobeaccurate,asChinabeingthestrongerstateengagedindifferenttypesofbehaviourthanthePhilippinesbeingtheweakerone.Liberalismprovidesausefuladditionbyallowingonetolookatdomesticstructures(regimetypeandeconomytype)asinfluencingfactorsofforeignpolicy.Moreover,whileitsfocusonabsolutegainsandwelfaremaximizationexplainedPhilippinebehaviourintheearly1990s,itwasoverallespeciallyhardtoaccountforChina’sforeignpolicyusingLiberalfactors,aseventuallyitsforeignpolicycouldberevertedbacktoRealistfactors.Moreover,LiberalismgenerallypredictedthesamebehaviourforChinaandthePhilippines,withtheexceptionoftheinfluenceoftheir(differing)politicalstructure,whileitisshownthattheirbehaviourvariedandwasstronglyinfluencedbytheirpowerposition.Lastly,theLiberalthesiscouldnotexplainwhyChinaandthePhilippinesfellbackintocontentiousbehaviourattheendofthe2000sdespiteincreasingtraderelations.Thus,whilewehaveseenthatmorefactorshaveinfluencedbothstates’behaviour,thecoreeventscanbeledbacktotheRealistthesiswithitsinfluencingfactorsgroundedintheinternationalstructure.Apparently,foreignpolicyincontentioussituationsstillfollowsRealistpredictions.Therefore,RealismisthestrongestunderlyingtheorytoexplainstatebehaviourintheSouthChinaSea." @default.
