• W2344293854 abstract "Electronic Commerce (EC) has many definitions used by different researchers for various purposes. The definition of EC, used here, is simple and broad. EC is commerce that utilizes electronic devices, technology, and/or applications in one or more business processes. The title of this dissertation, “Electronic Commerce in Business-to-Business Procurement: The Effects on Organizations”, refers to the interaction of businesses in the procurement of goods, services, and information that utilizes interorganizational information systems. The means of connecting the information systems, in the dissertation, is generally assumed to be the Internet. The effects referred to in the title are the changes in the relationship between organizations that participate in EC. In the latter part of the 1990's there was much discussion about disintermediation, the expansion of market-spaces (virtual market-spaces), and the advent of universal procurement (procurement open to anyone with a website). Much as the Internet bubble burst, so too did the predictions of revolutionary change in the operation of business-to-business procurement. The lynchpin of many of the predictions, Transaction Cost economics, has not produced the expected results. This dissertation examines business-to-business procurement via the Internet. It does so through the use of a simulation experiment designed to include non-economic factors such as the level of technology and the type of organizational culture. Simulation was chosen because there is insufficient historical evidence to determine the value of the various factors in estimating an organization's reaction to the expanding use of EC. The simulation itself was designed as a complex environment where separate organizational simulations operated within a simulated market. The organizations were given the ability to change themselves to better achieve a single goal, profit maximization. The results of the experiment can be summarized in a simple statement; while organizations do adjust to the changing environment of EC, they do so in a manner that does not radically change the structure of interactions between businesses. Businesses still deal one-on-one and they also continue to use Intermediaries. Market-spaces are used but they end up looking like Intermediaries.
