This is hardly surprising in a society where the nationalist majority which sought first home rule and then independence from Britain remained alienated from the existing political institutions. In this context, public political mobilizations were seen as a vital part of putting pressure on the Establishment to achieve desired change. Likewise unionists did not hesitate to use similar mobilizations to defend the status quo.
