- W2345947369 abstract "Remedy selection of contaminated soil needs detailed infonnation about water mobility ()n-site. Therefore the analysis of a suspected area has to be started with measurements concerning water mobility parameters as volumetric water content, porosity and bound water portion (earlier sorption). Every soil moisture measuring device has to be soil specific calibrated, but these parameters are very sensitive against laboratory preparation. The soil-matrix of an ~xtracted probe can change its sorption and water penetration ability by sampling. The laboratory measurements on water mobility often differ from site experiences, ~specially on waste disposal hills. In order to get realistic results every soil parameter nas to be evaluated in the field, in natural state and not in a laboratory. To do this, we developed a soil moisture sensor LUMBRICUS which is :alibrated in-situ without disturbing the measured volume and without any laboratory preparation. The sensor can serve long-term monitoring, also. (Our first device is on ;ite since 1990.) The sensor measures not only the volumetric water content, but also the change of the so called dry density. This unique feature enables to profit from these lmportant parameters in an inherent on-site and long-term measurement. The dielectric coefficient of the soil mixture will be measured outside of a fibre glass ;ube (0 130 mm, 2,5 m long), which is pushed into the soil. Then the same measuring volume will be frozen by filling liquid nitrogen into the tube. Now, the dielectric ;oefficient of the frozen soil will be measured again, (after the whole amount of water :hanged its phase into ice).The great difference of the diel. coeft'. between water :approx. 80) and ice (approx. 3,2) and their volumetric portion in the soil mixture ~ves a very accurate (± 1,5%) absolute measure for the volumetric water content, Jecause the change of solid and air due to temperature change is negligible.
