- W2345990078 abstract "In humans, sleep spans almost a third of their life time. Although the number of sleep hours may vary according to environmental demands and personal needs, it is unquestionable that both humans and animals need to sleep to maintain their body’s homeostasis. Experimental evidences indicate that prolonged wakefulness increases oxidative stress, decreases neurogenesis and induces neuronal apoptosis, among other brain-harmful events. Therefore it has been proposed that one of sleep functions is neuronal restoration or maintenance to compensate the brain damage occurring during wakefulness. In this review, we first describe some basic aspects of sleep-wake cycle biology; then we address some important evidences that support the hypothesis of sleep-dependent cerebral recovery. Despite the little work about this topic, current information is enough to realize the importance of sleep in the maintenance and conservation of cerebral integrity." @default.
