• W2347093314 abstract "The human endeavour to create something, an artifact of some kind, involves many related activities, often referred to as the life-cycle of the artifact. In general terms, the life-cycle involves an initial activity during which are established the need for the artifact and a general concept of the nature and purpose of the artifact (analysis). This is then followed by an activity in which the purpose is refined in terms of requirements, and the nature is refined in terms of features and functions needed by the artifact to meet the requirements (logical design). The next activity develops physical specifications for realizing the features and functions utilizing the materials and components from which the artifact is to be constructed (physical design). The final general activity involves construction of the artifact and the application of the artifact to its intended use (implementation). If the artifact is employed over time, it may undergo revision to meet changing needs, involving the activities again, hence the term cycle.The goal of our research is to formalize the transformation process imposed on requirements during the evolution of the design, into a model of design for obtaining a solution to a routine-design problem. In this model the initial requirements of a solution are viewed as constraints on the design which must be satisfied by the characteristics and behaviour of the components of the design artifact. The object-oriented paradigm with constraints is considered a suitable vehicle for such a computer-assisted design model.The thesis develops a design model in which requirements, in the form of constraint specifications, are made using a language which structures the requirements according to components and behaviour necessary in the design objects derived from the requirements. By specifying the requirements in this manner and using the requirements to generate the objects and to control the characteristics of the object, it is less likely that a wide variation will exist between the original requirements and the characteristics of the final design artifact.A brief description of routine architectural design is presented followed by a survey of related work in computer-assisted design of solutions to routine-design problems. This is followed by a discussion of the concepts of the object-oriented model of software design which are relevant to the routine-design problem domain.A study of the nature of design requirements, as constraints, from an object-oriented perspective is presented along with a discussion on a model of design which incorporates constraints both as design requirement statements and as object-manipulation statements. An architecture for a working design environment based on the design model is presented, along with an example of how such a model might be utilized during actual design. Contributions of this work and future directions for the research are discussed." @default.
