- W2347723722 abstract "By morphological study, mating experiments and electrophoretic analysis of isozymes, as well as by study of restriction maps of rDNA molecules by Jin, et al. (p, this issue), the Sl strain of Tetrahymena collected in Shanghai and used in this laboratory for cytological studies has been proved to be a new micronucleate species of the complex species of Tetrahymena py-riformis and is named Tetrahymena shanghaiensis. This new species is a selfer species, and selfing always produces healthy offsprings which are also selfers. Carefully designed mating experiments between this species and 2 mating types of each of the 12 species hitherto established (not including the 2 new species by Simon,-et al., 1985), i.e., T. thermophila, T. sonneborni, T. tropicalis, T. pigmentosa, T. Capricornis, T. boredis, T. americanis, T. australis, T. nipissingi, T. hegewischi, T. canadensis and T. hyper-angularis, showed that conjugation did not occur between this and any other species. The composition of isozymes of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH), tetrazolium oxidase (TO), glutamic dehydrogenase (GDH) and acetyl esterases (ACE) of this species differed markedly from those of most of other species, with the only exceptions of the electrophoretic patterns of TO and GDH, of which, under the experimental conditions, the former was identical to that of T. nipissingi and the latter identical to that of T. sonneborni. Electrophoretic pattern of the isozymes of ACE of this species was comparable, but not identical to that of T. australis. The restriction maps of rDNA of this species are markedly similar to those of T. austra-lis. This, as well as the similarity between the ACE electrophoretic patterns of this species and T. australis, is worthy of further investigation from the phylogenetical and geographical point of view." @default.
