This paper starts with a brief review of the previous finite element modelling and ambient vibration measurement works dance on Tsing Ma Bridge during the constructian stage. The ambient vibration measurements on Golden Gate Bridge, Humber Bridge and Bosporus Bridge are also briefly reviewed. The objective of this study is to identify the global dynamic characteristics (such as frequencies and mode shapes) of the bridge by three-dimensional finite element modelling and ambient vibration measurements. The modelling requirements and analysis procedures used in developing the three dimensional finite element model and the model characteristics such as elements used, boundary conditions and continuity representations are summarised. The methodologies and procedures of measurements that are necessary for structural identification of suspension bridge are defined and described with the illustration of typical measurement results. Comparisons of measured results with analytical simulations are also presented and discussed. A total number of 145 modal frequencies and modal displacement mode shapes of the bridge has been identified within 0 - 3.8 Hz frequency band. These numbers include 46 lateral fiexural deck modes, 34 vertical flexural deck modes, 45 torsional deck modes, 5 longitudinal deck modes, 45 lateral flexural tower modes, 24 longitudinal flexural tower modes, 19 torsional tower modes, 46 lateral cables modes and 31 vertical cable modes.
