- W2348653602 abstract "Stem cells have the hallmark property of self-renewal and multipotency of differentiating to mature cells of specific tissues and organs. It has been reported that the occurrence of some tumors closely related to adult stem cells. Tumor cells might arise from mutations that accumulated in the adult stem cells. There is a much greater opportunity for mutations to occur and accumulate in adult stem cells because of their indefinite proliferating potency and long-term existence. And tumor cells might also arise from mutations that accumulate in the primitive progenitors downstream of the adult stem cells. It was newly reported that tumor cells and adult stem cells shared many similarities—the similar self-renewal mechanisms and hierarchy. The concept of tumor stem cells was proposed thus. And the stochastic theory and hierarchy theory were summarized to explain the reason why not each tumor cell was capable of regenerating tumors and leading to metastasis. The hierarchy theory is prone to work in the carcinogenesis. At present, tumor stem cells have been separated from leukemia, some of solid tumors and long-term cultured tumor cell lines. These cells have the ability of self-renewal and the mechanism of multiple drugresistance that leads to the insensitivity to present anticancer therapies, relapse and metastasis. Thus eradication and detection of tumor stem cells might be of great significance to the treatment and prognosis of the cancerous disease." @default.
