- W235097039 abstract "1. IntroductionYear 2000, marked by deep structural changes, represents a true challenge for mankind in terms of building and strengthening sustainable communities, whose citizens with full rights to engage actively on labor market and to benefit equally, from facilities and privileges. In this context, in recent years, scientists have talked more and more about condition of women in society, both nationally and internationally. This topic is especially interesting to investigate in Romanian context, as we think about condition of women who is experiencing all economic, social and political transformations occurring after communist dictatorship. In European studies, concept of gender is increasingly used in formal environments. This is a dynamic concept which refers to social differences between men and women which are socially learned and changed over time along with social change. These differences vary widely within a culture, but also from one culture to another. Thus, paradigm of gender equity and equality seems to become a goal of contemporary world, being considered as one of fundamental human values that could contribute to successful accession to prospects of men and women equitable approach in all aspects of human life, including aspect of active life on labor market. The subject of equality between men and women has attracted attention among community of sociologists, for which was bom a new branch of sociology, called sociology of gender. Sociology of gender is a branch of sociology that deals with description of social reality from perspective of two genders (male and female) and relationship between them. This requires inclusion of gender as a central category of analysis and not only as demographic variable. This leads to a different approach that deals with gender inequalities and contributes to a better understanding of mechanisms by which social inequalities between men and women produce and reproduce (Albu, 2004).European Union, whose Member State is in present also Romania, promotes principle of gender equality in areas such as one represented by balance between work and family life. We refer particularly to measures promoted through family policies, measures that, in Romania, are still poorly represented. European Council called for giving more importance to European family policies, through notification of European Economic and Social Committee regarding The Family and Demographic Change from March 2007. This notification pinpoints importance of work and family life reconciliation measures, importance of gender equality policies and specific policies for mothers and fathers who fully participate in family responsibilities. notification also fires a warning shot - in context of demographic change facing whole world and taking into account that policies have effect only on long term - and argue that European Union must stress urgency of situation and propose to Member States to take action on sustainable family policy. As strong action, according to notification mentioned above, European Council, Parliament and Commission should promote, under principle of subsidiarity, a European Pact for family signed between Member States, which could include, among other commitments, also the guaranty for promoting an environment friendly for families, parents and children, involving implementation of this idea already old and rarely practiced to facilitate reconciliation of family and professional life, to ensure equality between women and men, taking into account, in effective modes, evolution in people's lifestyles and working styles (irregular schedules, long distances, high cost of housing in inner cities, lack of infrastructure for small children, etc..).Therefore, principle of work and family life balance is one of fundamental principles of European Union when it comes to promoting equality between women and men. …" @default.
