- W2351567202 abstract "In 10 dogs, intravenous injections of phenelzine 5 mg/kg increased significantly the aortic pressure, pulmonary arterial pressure, cardiac index, stroke index, and the work of both ventricles. Meantime, the peripheral vascular resistance was diminished. But subcutaneous administrations for 5 days elicited different effects, i.e., the aortic pressure was reduced markedly, but the cardiac index, stroke index, ventricular work and the peripheral vascular resistance were not much affected. Theseresults indicated that the intravenous injections of phenelzine caused sympathomimotic effects duo probably to its direct stimulation on adrenergic receptors, but subcutaneous administrations for 5 days gave sympatholytic effects via perhaps an inhibition on the release of sympathetic mediators. After subcutaneous injections of phenolzine for 5 days, the blood glucose level and arterial O_2 content were lowered. Following an intravenous injection, the increase of blood glucose was insignificant. In both acute and cbronic experiments, the arterial lactic acid and pyruvic acid levels, as well as the myocardial uptake, were reduced. Manometric measurements of the O_2 consumption of myocardial homogenate of guinea pigs demonstrated that phenelzine administered in vitro or in vivo could inhibit not only the monoamine oxidases but also the enzyme system for oxidation of pyruvic acid. Thus the myocardial O_2-sparing effect can be explained by the modification of the oxidative metabolism." @default.
