- W2351964345 abstract "Shanghai and New York are two great metropolises and economic centres of the world; both cities possess their own glamour and special features, and they have common ground in many other aspects. For example, they both have prospered on the basis of sea harbor development; they are known as the largest cities of their own countries and they are both metropolises characterized by open universalism. However, the differences between the two cities are quite obvious, too. New York is a global city, but Shanghai is still a regional city. Like New York, Shanghai is now undergoing a transformation from a port city centering on the manufacturing industry to an innovative city driven by modern service industries. New York and Shanghai are both faced with similar problems such as congestion, pollution, education concerns, and rising health-care costs. The chief competitive advantage of New York is that differencet opinions are respected there., that is, New York is a tolerant society with pluralism, which benefits a sudden spurt of people's creativeness. Shanghai is a young and promising city, with its skyscrapers and booming financial markets, rapid internationalization progress along with increasing speed to catch up with such metropolises as New York. It should be pointed out that a city's real path to development lies in its rejuvenation. It is necessary to consider the the productivity of a city above everything else, as well as to preserve and continue its history and cultural heritage. The competition of cities on the globe are not zero-sum games. Shanghai under the background of China emerging as a great nation and New York can seize opportunities to learn from each other and participate in a win-win competition." @default.
