- W2352400594 abstract "Objective To observe the all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the senile population and to analyze influence of impaired glucose metabolism. Methods A survey was conducted among 2239 old subjects aged 60 to 90 who had health examination in PLA General Hospital from 1996 to 1997. The subjects were examined every year and followed for 3-4 years. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) were diagnosed according to WHO criteria (1985). The cumulative survival rates of different groups were calculated by Kaplan-Meier method and Cox′s proportional hazard model. Results The elderly people were classified into three groups: normal glucose tolerance (NGT) (n=1521), IGT (n=279) and DM (n=439) at baseline. At the end of four observed years, the mortalities of IGT group and DM group were 7.55 and 8.86 per 1000 observation person-year, respectively, both groups were significantly higher than the mortality in NGT group (2.43/1000 person-year) (P0.05 and P0.01). The relative risk (RR) of mortality in IGT group and DM group was 2.70 (95%CI 1.56-3.81) and 2.84(1.57-4.12) afteradjustmentforage, therelativerisk (RR) was 3.14(2.15-5.12) and 3.46(2.20-5.23) after further adjustment for other cardiovascular disease risk factors. The cumulative survival rates fromall-causeinNGT,IGTandDMgroupswere0.988, 0.974 and 0.971, respectively (P0.05). The cumulative survival rates from cardio-cerebrovascular disease in IGT and DM were 0.982 and 0.980 respectively, both significantly lower than that in NGT group (0.996,P0.01). The Cox′s proportional hazard model analysis showed that the hazard ratio of age on death from all-cause deaths or cardio-cerebrovascular disease was significantly different (P0.001). It also showed that the hazard ratio of IGT and DM to NGT on death from cardiovasculardiseasewereremarkablydifferent(P0.05, P0.01), being 2.85(95%CI 1.19-4.79) and 2.97(95%CI 1.27-4.89), respectively. Conclusion The mortalities in DM and IGT groups from cardiovascular disease are significantly higher than that in NGT group. DM and IGT are the important risk factors causing cardiovascular disease death." @default.
