- W2352710411 abstract "The earth rotation parameters (ERP) vary with time, their variation is significant even in the time interval of one observing session. At present, it is impossible to determine their instantaneous values. Therefore, the determination of ERP will be contaminated by the variation of themselves. This error in ERP determination depends on two factors: (1)the amplitude of variation; (2) the coefficients in the observing equation (i. e. the observing geometry). The variation of ERP is complicated, but within one observing session (a few hours to a few days), it is reasonable to approximate UT1 variation as linear and polar motion variation as linear plus diurnal variation. In SLR or VLBI technique, if the rates ,_p, _p are known with appropriate accuracy, then taking these rates into account, one could solve the ERP at certain epoch, and the results basically will not be affected by the above mentioned variation problem. But the calculated from BIH circular D is not accurate enough, and that from rapid service is much worse. Furthermore, VLBI is an independent technique for determine ERP, it should not rely on other technique to provide initial ERP value. Therefore, this ERP variation problem will induce additional error to the ERP solution. Take VLBI as example, simulated calculation shows, if no initial value of u is given, the rate of UT1-UTC (0″.02/day) would cause a few miUi-arcysecond error in ERP solution for 24h observing session (in simulation, 24 sources are observed by 3 antennae). Comparing with the precision of this technique, this error source is important. It is suggested, that be taken as an solved-for parameter. The linear rate of polar motion is much smaller (average 0″.002/day), so is its effect. And the predicted _p,_p might be good enough to account for this problem. There might be diurnal component in polar motoin (either from geophysical reason or caused by precession error etc), its rate might be comparatively large. simulated calculation shows, if its amplitude is 0.″01, its effect on ERP results is also a few milli-src second. Therefore, its effect might be serious. The effect of diurnal variation could not be averaged out eyen by 24h continuous observation. If it is possible, the diurnal polar motion should be solved for even not for studying the diurnal motion itself, it is useful for ERP determination." @default.
