- W2353202992 abstract "In this study,we explored through video records various mathematically valid,competing student ideas for the solution of a mathematical task posed in a middle-school mathematics class.More particularly,we used an inter-connective and interactive perspective to examine the dynamic of students’ ideas and relationship between these different,yet appropriate ways of interpreting the task,especially in the context of the classroom lesson where only one solution was accepted by the class.We identify the significant mathematical insight in these apparent incorrect solutions.We had developed a methodological approach to visually mapping these emergent student ideas and the non-linear relationships between them;and the implications such classroom dynamics had on typical linear teacher lesson plans.We found that individuals radically adapted their own thinking when juxtaposed against classroom movements,and we identify the phenomenon of class consensus.We discussed some possibilities of developing students’ algebra ideas with and through difference and conflicts." @default.
