- W2353363259 abstract "Records indicate that Cephus cinctus Norton, the wheat stem sawfly, has been a significant pest of dryland wheat in the northern Great Plains from the inception of wheat cultivation in the region. Altering agro- nomic practices has the potential to impact sawfly populations and those of associated natural enemies. Preliminary data from three sites in Montana seeded to winter wheat supports observations by local growers that by planting wider fields, as opposed to the traditional long, narrow 'strip' fields, the ratio of field to field interior is lowered, resulting in a reduction in the damage caused by the wheat stem sawfly, commonly referred to as an edge effect pest. Contrary to the predicted trend, correlates of sawfly damage, including stem infestation and stem cutting, were found to be only infrequently statis- tically lower in samples drawn from wide versus narrow fields, whereas levels of parasitism were similar for both field types. Additional research evaluating the enhancement of parasitoid conservation through changes in tillage prac- tices related to weed management is discussed in terms of integrated sawfly management, by combining altered cultivation practices with the agronomic tactic of planting sawfly-resistant, solid stem wheat. Preliminary data is also presented from two fields planted with solid stem spring wheat with differing levels of infestation by the grassy weed, wild oat. Wild oat has been previously reported as an unsuitable host, because sawfly larvae feeding in stems never complete development. When wild oat is more phenologically advanced or more locally abundant than its crop counterpart, it becomes a target for sawfly oviposition, although the proportion of wild oat stems infested is much lower than for adjacent spring wheat stems. Further, in samples where both wheat and wild oat stems are available, the proportion of spring wheat stems selected for oviposition increases, relative to the rate of oviposition in samples contain- ing stems of wheat only. These findings, all linked to cultivation practices in" @default.
