- W2354899234 abstract "Purpose This article is to describe the efficacy of radiotherapy for epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma of the oral cavity.Materials and Methods From June 1986 to December 1996,62 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related epidemic oral Kaposi's sarcoma (EKS) were treated with radiation therapy at Oncology department of Henri Mondor University Hospital. Distribution of patients' sex were 61 in males and 1 in female with the average age of 39.2 years (ranged 28～62 years). Forty four patients had received previous chemotherapy and interferon. Radiotherapy consisted of 45KV x-rays and high evergy 4 MV x-rays depending on tumor size and location. Radiation doses were 15～15.2 Gy (50 patients),30.4 Gy (3 patients),and 10～20 Gy(9 patients treated with orthovoltage irradiation).Results Oral mucosal reaction were observed after even lower doses. In 50 patients who received TD 15～15.2 Gy,severe reactions were observed in 8 patients (16%),moderated reaction in 9 patients (18%),and mild reaction in 33 patients (66%). Treatment was successful in achieving good symptom palliation effects, and objective complete response rate was 17.8% (11/62),and partial response rate 82.3%(51/62).Conclusion EKS is a radiosensitive tumor and radiotherapy is an efficient treatment method for EKS of oral lesions.Radiation dose of 15 Gy is sufficient to produce shrinkage or disappearance of the tumor of the oral lesions and good palliation of symptoms. We advocate that the prophylactic measures with antifungal treatment be systematically associated with oropharyngeal irradiation to improve tolerance to the radiation therapy." @default.
