- W2355616055 abstract "An established prayer of shang ruo, shou wo you下上若,授我佑 was frequently used in the divination records inscribed on tortoise shells or animal bones (jia guo wen甲骨文of the Shang dynasty). Here the xia shang should not refer to a specific natural deity or ancestor. The meanings of the term xia shang regards the heaven and earth full of deities as the object to be prayed. However, the king of Shang's emphasis in the prayer is not to include all the deities but to seek the intercommunication between the heaven and earth to get a concurrent bless from the up and down and protect the king's achievements. In the earlier development of Chinese characters, besides of its literal meanings, its hieroglyphic meanings are also very important, in that the structure of a character could express deep concept in the records of divination rituals. In the kernel tradi-tion of Chinese forbears, the structure of the hexagram Tai ((?),the 11th hexagram in the received version of Zhouyi) just reveals the communication between heaven and earth. Besides hexagram Tai, Guizang《归藏》tra-ditionally ascribed to the Shang dynasty also arranged hexagram Kun in the first and Qian in the second place, thus it can also be called a shang yi下上易. In my opinion, the established prayer of shang ruo, shou wo you下上若,授我佑 used by the king is to attain the state of Tai,and thus the inscriptions put the xia in the higher position and the shang in the lower position to connote this meaning." @default.
