- W2355667939 abstract "Objective To evaluate the effects of respiratory monitoring and respiratory support on trauma patients. Methods We presented 7152 trauma patients who were admitted to our hospital during 1991 to 1998, of whom 289 patients were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). Among the 289, 68 cases underwent mechanical ventilation with average duration of 7.5(1～44) days due to hypoxemia refractory to noninvasive therapy. Vital signs were monitored immediately on admission. Blood gas analysis was conducted repeatedly according to patients' needs. Hemodynamic monitoring and oxygen dynamics monitoring were carried out for those with severe hypoxemia. Results In the 68 cases receiving mechanical ventilation, 8 died. The mortality rate was 8.82%. Conclusions Physical examination of respiratory system and noninvasive oxygen saturation are the basic monitoring for trauma patients. Blood gas analysis should be done repeatedly for trauma patients with hypoxemia. Hemodynamics and oxygen dynamics monitoring are necessary for severe trauma patients who need mechanical ventilation. Mechanical ventilation is effective to most patients with hypoxemia following trauma. Yet close monitoring in ICU is also needed for these patients." @default.
