- W2355755044 abstract "The first utilization of fibers for surgical sutures goes back to Ancient Egypt. For a long time different materials such as vegetable fibers, hair and tendons of animals were used. Totally free of germs, synthetic fibers have gradually replaced the natural fibers. Synthetic implants appeared in the 1950s in the United States with the associated essential concept of biocompatibility. The chemicals, biologicals, temporal, and mechanical aspects form part of the notion of biocompatibility. In a short time, the passive notion of biocompatibility became too limited. Therefore a new positive approach of biocompatibility appeared. The implantable structure then became an active system with additional functions in order to improve biocompatibility, efficiency, and even rebuild the failing organ. To create new implantable structures able to effectively replace native organs with associated metabolic activity, physical and mechanical properties is the ultimate goal being pursued. Fibers play an important role in this race. It appears that the topography of fibers, the interlacing of fibers, their composition, the mechanical behavior of the structure, the durability are all relevant parameters. But the appearance of new encapsulation techniques, of functionalization, of stem cell seeding, and of production of new hierarchical structures are literally exploding the strategies to regenerate diseased organs. In this chapter we try to address the overall potential of fibrous tissue engineering." @default.
