- W2357294402 abstract "The purpose of this research was to determine teachers' views on lunch/recess duty, their problems with it and their suggestions. Survey method was used in the study. The data were collected from 20 schools through a questionnaire consisting of six open-ended questions. The questionnaires were filled out by teachers at some schools at city center in Aydin during 2012-2013 academic-year, spring semester. A total of 236 teachers filled out the questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed through content analysis technique. This is an important study in terms of clarifying teachers' views, problems and suggestions on lunch/recess duty and of taking advantage of the study for any other study on lunch/recess duty. SUMMARY Purpose and significance: According to regulations of institutions connected to Ministry of National Education, teachers fulfill their lunch/recess duty- one of the basic elements of education and schooling- in accordance with watch list. Points related with fulfilling lunch/recess duty have been determined by formal correspondence. Even if lunch/recess duty is considered as a procedure or as a simple event, it is worth doing research as lunch/recess duty is a concept which must be handled based on several variables such as teacher, administer, social learning environment and implicit program. The purpose of this research was to determine teachers' views on lunch/recess duty, their problems with it and their suggestions. This is an important study in terms of exploring teachers' views, problems and suggestions on lunch/recess duty and of taking advantage of the study for any other study on lunch/recess duty. Method: Survey model was used in the study. The data were collected from 20 schools (12 elementary schools (1-4), 5 elementary schools (1-8), 1 elementary school (5-8) and 2 high schools. The data was collected through a questionnaire, developed by the researcher, consisting of six open-ended questions. The questionnaires were filled out by teachers selected through convenience sampling method at some schools at city center in Aydin during 2012-2013 academic-year, spring semester. Questionnaires were administered by graduate students at a non-thesis master's program. A total of 236 teachers filled out the questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using content analysis technique. Results:The results showed that lunch/recess duty had a significant role in running a school according to most teachers, and that the duty assigns several responsibilities to teachers. Also, teachers considered themselves as watchmen or guardians to keep the safety at school during their lunch/recess duty, which exhausted teachers on duty both physically and psychologically. Besides, teachers were aware of sanctions in case some problems took place during their duty. Thus, teachers could lose their performance both in their lessons and in their social life. While some teachers saw lunch/recess duty as a chore, some teachers saw it as an educational activity in some ways. They mentioned students' reluctance to enter classroom, fighting, disrespect towards them and breaking school rules as the most prominent problems during a typical day they were on duty. The most common suggestion among teachers was that either teachers should not be assigned lunch/recess duty or got paid extra for the duty. Discussion and Conclusion:It is obvious that teachers are aware of responsibilities brought by lunch/recess duty such as controlling entrances and exits. However, most of the teachers did not believe that lunch/recess duty belonged to them. Also, they mentioned a lot of problems, most of which arise from student-based issues, which affect both their professional and social lives. Teachers' performance in the classroom decreases because of the exhaustion. In order to lessen the teachers' burden due to lunch/recess duty, some recommendations can be made such as security guard or extra fee." @default.
