- W2357608105 abstract "Dense populations of phytoplankton in a lake tend to deplete inorganic carbon, with an associated rising of pH that is usually above 8. So the major form of inorganic carbon is HCO-3. Algae which can utilize bicarbonate as inorganic carbon source become dominant in eutrophic water. Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus quadricauda both have the ability to use HCO-3. To understand the effects of alkalinity on growth and competition of M. aeruginosa and S. quadricauda, the experiments were conducted on BG11 medium with different concentrations of bicarbonate. The results showed that the two algae both grew well in the separate experiments because they can directly or indirectly use bicarbonate as inorganic carbon source in photosynthesis. The optimal alkalinity for growth of M. aeruginosa was about 2.4 mmol·L-1. And a lag phenomenon occurred during the growth beginning of M. aeruginosa at high alkalinity. The density of S. quadricauda cells increased with increasing of bicarbonate levels. In competition experiments, the density of two algae cells both decreased compared to that in separate experiment. If without other restricting factors such as nutrients and temperature, the competition ability of M. aeruginosa was higher than that of S. quadricauda in the lowest alkalinity level, but less than that of S. quadricauda in the high alkalinity condition." @default.
