- W2358521043 abstract "Objective: This study illustrated the spontaneous recovery of language in Chinese aphasic patients during the first 6 months after stroke. Methods: 30 Chinese aphasic patients were initially tested at a mean of 10.5 days post-onset and reassessed at 1,2,4,6 months, using the same Chinese aphasia test battery. Results: Improvement of language was seen in all patients to a greater or lesser degree. The greatest improvement was observed during the first 2 months. The spontaneous recovery lasted for 2～4 months. Auditory comprehension, oral expression and reading comprehension got significantly recovery at first. The final level of writing reached at 6 months was the worst. Initial severity of aphasia was negative predictor of aphasic outcome and initial severity of auditory comprehension was positive predictor. The younger recovered better. Conclusion: Spontaneous recovery of language in Chinese aphasic patients was seen most markedly during the first 2 months and lasted for 2～4 months. The extent of recovery in writing ability was the worst. Even patients with severe speech impairment had a considerable potential for recovery. Age, initial severity of aphasia and auditory comprehension affected outcome." @default.
