- W2359096266 abstract "Objective To evaluate an acute experimental cerebral venous occlusion model in cats with DWI and histopathological study. Methods Twenty-two cats were randomly divided into 2 groups, including operation group (n=18) and sham operation group (n=4). Acute cerebral venous occlusion was induced by rostral and caudal injection of 0.5 ml of the cellulose acetate polymer (CAP) solution into the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and by immediate ligation of bilateral external jugular veins. DWI, T_2WI, and FLAIR were continuously performed after the operation at an interval of 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h, respectively (n=3 for each sub-group). The relative apparent diffusion coefficient (rADC) and relative area ratio (rs) of the biggest hyperintensity signal slice on MRI were measured. Macroscopic examination, lightscopy (hematoxylin-eosin staining), and electron-microscopy were compared with MRI data. Results The early pathological changes were only detected with DWI (within 1h), and then the lesions were also detected with T_2WI and FLAIR after 3 h. The lesions with hyperintensity and isointensity signal were observed on DWI after 24 h. The rADC value decreased quickly to (50.2±6.9)% of the control value at 1 h, then increased slowly at an average ascending velocity of 8.7%/h between 3 and 12 h, decreased again at an average descending velocity of 4.75%/h between 12 and 24, and increased slowly and approximinately equal to the control value after 24 h. The rADC value at 1 h showed significant difference with that at 48 h (t=10.2335, P0.01). No abnormal changes were observed pathologically in 4 cats of sham operation group. There were castlike materials formed by CAP within SSS , bridging veins and cortical veins in 14 cats. The cortical lesions were stained with Evans blue dye after 12 h. The corresponding sequential pathologic changes were gradual increase of intracellular edama (within 1-3 h), the emergence of vasogenic and cytotoxic edema (3-12 h), predominant vasogenic edema (12-24 h), and final hemorrhagic infarction (24-48 h). Conclusion DWI can discriminate cytotoxic edema with vasogenic edema induced by the occlusion of cerebral veins. DWI is useful in the early evaluation of the consequences for brain tissue." @default.
