- W2359817505 abstract "Fear of crime has become a major field of research since the 1970’s. Efforts to reduce fear have mainly focused on strategies involving visible police presence. Here it is argued that it is also useful to investigate the physical environment and its effect on public fear of crime, in interaction with police presence. This study investigated the combined effect and interaction of environmental dilapidation and police presence on fear of crime and judgements of likelihood of crime. Previous research in these areas has shown that the physical environment and the police may both influence people’s responses to the perceived threat of crime (Brantingham & Brantingham, 1991; Wilson & Kelling, 1982), but the interaction of these two factors in relation to crime fear had previously not been assessed. Digital still colour images showing three different urban, residential areas with varying degrees of dilapidation and police presence were rated by 102 participants on a five point scale according to two separate issues; personal safety and judgements of likelihood of criminal activity. A multiple card sort was used to collect more detailed qualitative data from 17 people. It was found that fear of crime ratings were higher for the dilapidated than for the affluent area and that fear ratings decreased with a moderate level of police presence, and increased again with a high level of police presence. This effect varied between the three environments; in particular, the increase in fear associated with a high number of police was greater in the affluent area. Crime was judged more likely as environmental dilapidation increased, as well as increasing with the number of police present. There was also some evidence that fear ratings in response to the photographs were influenced by participants’ personal experience of crime. Counter-intuitively, those who had experienced crime gave lower fear ratings." @default.
