• W2360408942 abstract "Prior research on religion and education in the United States suggests two broad findings: a positive relationship between religious participation and educational outcomes, and a negative association between affiliation with Conservative Protestant and Pentecostal groups and educational attainment. Yet, no known study has examined if these relationships persist in Latina/o congregations. In this study, we examine the association between multilevel religious dynamics (e.g., church attendance, denominational affiliation, and congregational characteristics) and Latino youths’ educational expectations via a hierarchical linear modeling approach. Findings show that religious service attendance is positively associated with educational expectations across religious traditions. Findings also indicate that Latino Pentecostal youth have lower educational expectations than Latino evangelicals but not Catholics. Multilevel results indicate that congregation-level socioeconomic differences between Latino Pentecostals and Latino evangelicals likely account for these group differences. We find that both individual and contextual religious dynamics shape Latino youth's educational expectations." @default.
