- W2361031709 abstract "This paper is the second part of our report on the birds of Hainan, dealing with 91 species under 22 families. Besides two new subspecies (Pteruthius flaviscapis lingshuiensis and Sitta frontalis chienfengensis) previously published (Cheng, 1963; Cheng et al., 1964), the paper includes four new records to the island avifauna, i. e,., Hypsipetes mcclettandii similis, Dierurus annectans, Turdus naumanni eunomus, and Dicaeum ignipectus ignipectus.Under faunal analysis, two topics are under consideration:(1) Paunal affinities: Species showing Oriental affinity occupy more than 79% of the total number of breeding species, while those of Palaearctic affinity only 3%.(2) Trends of subspecific differentiation: It is pointed out that besides differentiation in the body color, the island subspecies show a distinct shortage of wings. Results of analyses of stomach contents of birds collected are given in a tabular form. Such data may be of use in making estimates concerning the economic value of the birds under consideration. The present paper together with the previous report of our investigation (Shaw et Hsu, 1966) presents altogether a total of 207 species under 20 orders and 50 families, estimated to constitute about two-thirds of the island avifauna so far known. Further investigations concerning systematics, ecology, population density, economic significance as well as the dividing of zoogeographical regions of the avifauna of Hainan are much to be desired." @default.
