- W2361444234 abstract "The present work is based on the previous study of the rare chinese black muntjac.Because the black muntjac inhabit high altitude's and in Luxuriant forest, their reproduction in nature has been virtually unknown for several decades. For these reasons studies of its reproduction are fundamentally important for understanding of its abundence and increase. The reproduction status of 71 black muntjac(47,24)was recorded and studied during December-April in 1978-1981 at kaihui county, zhekiang province, east China. In addition to these specimen 68 (39.29) from Anhui province were also used in this study. The male black muntjac becomes sexually mature when the testes measurements are 4.47+ 0.3945x2.49+0.3247cm and the epididymic 1.02+ 0.0833x0.80+0.2179cm ( n = 10)which had sperm present in the epididymic. This is just after the third molar has erupted.Another distinguishing characteristic of sexual maturity of the male is that appearence of the antler tip is synchronous with ths third moiar eruption. This suggests that the grown of the antler tip is associated with the development of sexual maturity, the juvenile male only has a 3 - 5cm length of pedicle with no antler. In the full grown male, the pedicle shows a voronet and with antler clearly, the subadult has not coronet. The age was estimated to be a little over ten months, using teeth development and wearing as criteria of age.As for the female, 24 female muntjac specimen were examined and a-nalysed.In 20 adult females there are 19 females in breeding condition (table I ) .Of the females ten are pregnant.Analysis of all pregnant m-untjac which contained various stages of feotuses, especially the six January specimens with feotuses ranging from 2 -1520 g are interesting. Speciment No.291 was the largest .feotus in the that month which was conceded to be nearly a full grown and in its late stage of gestation.Specimen No.292 also collected in January was in lactation period, had yet a placenta which suggested that the muntjac give birth f-airly recently.specimen No.178 was the smallest feotus in the collection and only 2g in weight, which indicated it was recently pregnant and would not give birth until June. The ten pregnant specimens indicated that the black muntjac may produce fawn from January to June, its mating and gestation period is from June to December.post-partum estrus has been observed in specimen No.292.it was in lactation was carried a feetal weight 256g. The mammary gland secreted about 20 ml of milk. This suggests that the black muntjac undergo a post-partum estrus after parturition. The age at sexusl mature in females around 6-8month.Observation of the tooth development shows that the youngest females reach maturity and breed when the second molars has erupted. This is very similar to tne Chinese muntiac(Muntiacus reevesi) which reach maturity and breed at the age of 6 - 8 month and also has two molar teeth erupted. The female is found to nature earlier than the ma les. It was suggested that the breeding of black muntjac is continus throughout . the year, and no definite breeding season. And there is only one feotus in each litter." @default.
