- W2361958353 abstract "Field observations and subsequent laboratory studies on five sulphide deposits (2Pb-Zn deposits,one copper-bearing pyritic deposit,2 sulphide mineralizations) show thatthe oxidation zone of these deposits differs to a considerable extent from the corres-ponding deposits in humid regions both in the vertical zoning effects,and also in mineralassemblage,distribution and fixation of various elements.1.The oxidation zone under consideration can be subdivided into three verticalsubzones.They are (from top downward): (1) the limonite-hematite subzone;(2) thejarosite subzone; (3) the subzone of gypsum and nature sulphur.Subzone of jarosite is extensively developed in all the five deposits and crops outin very large amounts direcly on the surface in two of the deposits,almost completelydisplacing the overlying limonite-hematite subzone.The latter phenomenon has hithertoscarcely been mentioned in geologic literature.The limonite-hematite subzone,as wellas the jarosite subzone,comprise the so called iron hat. The subzone of gypsum and native sulphur is well expressed when the country rockis composed mainly of carbonates.Even when the ores are situated in an enrironmentof Al-silicate rocks,gypsum and native sulphur have much wider occurrences than in cor-responding deposits in humid regions.Opal and quartz are important constituents.2.The sulphate minerals are extensively developed in the natural outcrop of these deposits.So far,the authors have been able to identify more than 30 sulphate minerals,not accounting the different varieties.In addition to jarosite,copiapite,fibroferrite,halotrichite and sideronatrite are the common sulphates,but in much lesser amount thanjarosite.Other sulphate minerals are more scarce and achieve noticeable concentrationonly in local spots. The sulphate minerals fellow a rather definite pattern in distribution.Usually,theferric sulphates are observed in the jarosite subzone,while the ferrous varieties have theirprominant development in the subzone of gypsum and native sulphur or in the under-lying zone of secondary sulphide enrichment.Where residual pyrite grains are encoun-tered,the ferrous and ferric sulphates may form successive rings surrounding the former. Secondary zinc minerals,such as smithsonite,hydrozincite,willemite and hemi-morphite,are either absent or very weakly shown in the oxidation zone of all the de- posits under consideration.In the zone of oxidation of the Pb-Zn deposit,situated onthe northern border of Tzadam Basin,zinc copiapite and zinc botryogen are relativelywidely distributed. 3.Na,K,Ca,Mg are relatively abundant in the oxidation zone of all the depositsreferred to.The Na content seems to be predominant over that of K,both elementsbeing represented chiefly in jarosite and sideronatrite,and to a much smaller extent,inmetavoltine,voltaite,goldichite,metasideronatrite(?) and amarillite(?). Many sulphate minerals are Mg-and Al-containing,rendering these elements mode-rately concentrated in the zone of oxidation.Ca,though also enriched,is representedmainly in gypsum. 4. The above-mentioned main characteristics of the oxidation zone of the sulphidedeposits owe their origin to the arid to extremely arid climate,which seems to haveprevailed in the regions studied since the post-Tertiary time,during which period theprimary sulphide ores have gradually been altered to the present state." @default.
